Photography Methods
- Duane Michals shot a lot of things but focused primarily on sequences of images, mostly portraits, and he worked with the idea of painting on photos in 2012 as well.
- For the most part, Michals photos were only used for his exhibitions, but h did shoot for magazines on occasion.
- Duane liked to shoot portraits because he felt s though you could tell a lot about a person through the image. He is also credited with shooting strange feelings or ideas. Some of them include "What happens after death? What is memory? What is time? How to depict the human condition?"
- His sequences create images that reflect his desires and his fears. He He felt that anything could be used as the subject of a photo "especially those things that cannot usually be mentioned: anxiety, grief, dreams, nightmares, sexual attraction, memories."
- Despite new technology, Duane Michals still shoots with Tri-X film using black and white film. He only uses two cameras, 35mm Canons.
- Duane Michals has a tendency to use naturaul light for most of his images.
- Because Duane's photography had no real standard and everything he did was so different his backgrounds and perspectives for his shoots changes often and were not constant through his carer.
- Michals felt that the portraits he shot for his "comic-strip" like sequences, that each of the portraits should only contain things that would add to the image and relate to the subject of the image.
Collaborations and Awards
Due to his uniqueness as a photographer, Michals didn't work with many other photographers but he worked with companies like Vogue, Mirabella and Mademoiselle to photograph a couple celebrities every once in a while.
